I also appreciate the advice on trolling crankbaits and the importance of using electronics to locate the fish. The tips on using spinners and crankbaits are helpful, especially with the different color combinations that have been effective. It's interesting how the guides mentioned that the fish aren't in their typical spots, but anglers are still finding success. Wow, it seems like the fishing conditions in the Rainy River and back bays are really productive for pike! I'm amazed to hear about the great walleye fishing as well. Change bait out every 10 to 15 minutes to keep a good scent trail going. I like using fish caught right out of the river - you know the cats are eating those same fish too. It is legal to use game fish for bait in Wisconsin as long as it meets length requirements. As long as you are in Wisconsin territorial waters you can use just about anything you catch for bait. Sheepshead makes good cut bait and you can catch a bunch quickly on nightcrawlers right before you start catting. Cut sucker works fine or just catch your own bait first. I would recommend using cut bait - it leaves a good scent trail in the water and helps the cats find your bait. The more friends the more rods and the better your chances of finding fish. Bring a friend and run a long string of six rods out along the shore. ![]() You can fish three rods from the Wisconsin shore with your Minnesota license so it improves your chances for finding cats. Your Minnesota license is good from either shore, Wisconsin or Minnesota. If I was looking for a good chance of finding cats on the St Croix fishing from shore I would try below the Mallileu dam in North Hudson. Are there any good shore spots, to catch some big catfish from?
